Next generation AI for robotics and industrial control: a spinout journey

Dr Matthew Carr, CEO, Luffy AI

Luffy AI is a spinout company focused on developing next generation neural networks for robotics and embedded hardware. Compared to the current generation of AI technologies, Luffy AI’s neural networks exhibit greater energy efficiency, self-learning and the ability to run without cloud computing. These innovations represent a step change in capability and open multiple market opportunities. The first major product is the development of a neural controller for walking robotics in hazardous environments.

Luffy AI is a team spinout from United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), with all co-founders worked at JET the world’s leading nuclear fusion laboratory.

Applying sensor IP and knowledge to local weather conditions to enable self-driving cars

Patrick Sachon, Business Development, Met Office Weather will play a vital role in the safe and efficient operation of Connected Autonomous Vehicles. The Met Office has developed knowledge of how weather impacts platforms and sensors across many domains including defence, transport and industry and is working with the autonomous vehicle sector to understand how it’s knowledge assets and IP can help the sector develop and operate safely and effectively. This talk will explore how the Met Office is applying its IP and knowledge assets to support future transport and the challenges a government organisation faces operating in a fast-moving innovative arena.

The path to plentiful fusion energy with no CO2 emissions

Dr Melanie Windridge, Communications Consultant, Tokamak Energy Fusion power can be used to produce electricity, heat for industrial processes or hydrogen. There are many key advantages including increased safety such as no risk of meltdown or long-lived radioactive waste; rapid deployability at large scale; plentiful, inexpensive and efficient use of land. This talk will outline the compact modular fusion technology that is under development by Tokamak Energy which is paving the way to achieve clean and abundant fusion energy, revolutionising the way the world can generate power.

Transferring Rawwater's molten metal sealing technology from the oil and gas sector into nuclear industry

Paul Knight, Technology Commercialisation Manager, National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) & Prof Bob Eden, Managing Director, Rawwater

Rawwater made the transition into the nuclear sector through Sellafield’s Game Changers programme in conjunction with NNL. The company is exploring applications for the technology at Sellafield, and more recently in the Japanese market via a new contract with TEPCO, brokered by NNL who will monitor the Rawwater project and provide independent review. This talk will highlight Rawwater’s adaptations of its bismuth metal alloy technology introduced to the oil and gas industries for sealing abandoned oil wells and explore the significant benefits it offers to the nuclear sector.

The world's best 'spot the difference': safer, faster, better digital imaging for infrastructure inspection

Dr Nick McCormick, Principal Research Scientist, National Physical Laboratory

One of the most common ways to identify change in objects is to look at them, however the human eye is not good at detecting small changes over time. NPL have worked on developing imaging methods in combination with application specific image capture equipment to enable automated identifications of changes over time, or with use. This talk will outline NPL’s system that can measure changes from fixed positions, like for a bridge, from moving positions like in a rail tunnel, or from handheld imaging equipment like a mobile phone, combined with augmented reality to help with repositioning.

Following the presentations, there will be an extended Q and A session for further questions to all the presenters.
